American Gods written by Neil Gaiman is being turned into a TV show! So many new shows to look forward to, and this is definitely one of them. This will premiere on Starz. I've been a long-time fan of Neil Gaiman (who hasn't), and I think it's great that one of his novels is being turned into a TV series. Other works have already been made into movies (Coraline, Stardust). I have this book already and have reread it many times. My ultimate favorite work of his is obviously the Sandman comic series. I never know what type of format I want that to take. If it's ever brought to life. Do I want one movie that introduces the characters but then they never follow through with a sequel to continue the story? Or would it be better as a TV series but that could get canceled and stop awkwardly in the middle of the story? I do see the material being easier to understand through a TV series. Each tale (comic) could be an episode. I could talk endlessly about my love and devotion to the Sandman comics but I'll save that for another post. Anyway, back to American Gods. This has great potential as a TV series. It may be limiting somewhat in the audience but it would be a kind of story line that can continually develop as the series progresses.
The story mostly focuses on Shadowy, a recently released felon, and all the gods, mythical creatures, beasties, and crazy characters that he meets going forward with his life. Forgotten gods. Reimagined gods. Modern gods. And of course I love that Bryan Fuller (hem hem Hannibal) will be a part of this (the above image is concept art reveiled by Fuller). And Neil Gaiman will be an executive producer. I love when the actual author is a part of the process. It helps keep their original vision intact. Bryan Fuller even hopes that Neil will pen an episode himself. There's no word yet on the release date but Fuller hopes for sometime in late 2016. The wait begins!
